Tenebrism

January 2017

This piece could use any subject matter, but had to focus on a certain style of art. Having some previous experience with chiaroscuro, I decided to tackle tenebrism for this piece. Tenebrism focuses on extreme light areas contrasted with extreme dark areas, often with the subject becoming fully obscured in darkness. The idea of using this technique for a scene with water seemed like it would yield interesting results, so I chose to draw a water lily and lily pads. This was drawn with colored pencils on black Stonehenge paper, and the finished piece is 18”x24.”
